Ryan Fox bounced back from a triple bogey to beat Englishmen Tyrrell Hatton and Aaron Rai to the BMW Championship in stunning fashion at Wentworth.

New Zealand’s Fox emerged from the chasing pack with eight birdies in his round of 67 to post 18-under, recovering superbly from his seven on the par-4 third.

The 2020 champion Hatton was in control at one stage and birdied the par-5 last, leaving Fox needing to match his score to secure victory, while Rai agonisingly lipping out for a closing eagle that would have forced a play-off.

Fox saw Hatton celebrate his four and laid up down the 18th fairway, before brilliantly hitting his wedge approach to six feet and celebrating a memorable win.

Jon Rahm finished a further shot adrift at 16-under-par, while overnight leader Ludvig Aberg failed to capitalise on his two stroke advantage, failing backwards with a four-over round of 76.

Viktor Hovland was fifth on 15-under, with Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy also battling to top-ten finishes.

A useful week, then, for European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who saw some of his big stars hitting form at exactly the right time with the showdown at Marco Simone now under two weeks away.
