Charlie Woods had his dad Tiger on the bag as he fired a six-under par 66 to earn his spot in the Notah Begay III National Championship.

There was a trademark Woods fist pump on the 18th on Sunday as Charlie battled off strong competition to claim victory in the 14-15 age division of the Last Chance Regional and secure his place in one of junior golf’s biggest tournaments.

Charlie, 14, backed up his first round 71 with seven birdies in his closing 66, nailing a ten-footer on the last to win by one shot.

And many fans will be delighted to see his injury-ravaged father walking the course again as he steps up his recovery from foot surgery.

Tiger, of course, is not a bad figure to have on the bag down the closing stretch of a golf tournament with the finishing line in sight.

“It’s great. We just stay in our own little world,” Charlie said when asked about his father being his caddie after his win.

“We take it one shot at a time. He puts me in my place. I’ll talk about the next tee shot and he’s like ‘No.’ This is the shot we’re going to focus on.”

Charlie added: “Shooting 68 last year and followed up with 66 this year. Obviously, this course is great for me… You have to go shoot a low round to win this thing, and it’s not going to be given. Just took it one shot at a time, don’t think too far ahead, and you just gotta keep eating. That’s it.”

It was a big victory for Charlie, who birdied his closing holes to edge out his nearest competitor Kaden Puranik.

Charlie, and perhaps Tiger, will now head to the Notah Begay III National Championship, which is held at Coushatta Casino Resort in Louisiana from November 4-6.
