Two of the world’s top five ranked players have been added to the field for the Genesis Scottish Open alongside a former winner.

Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay will compete in the Rolex Series event next month, as will former champion Rickie Fowler.

The stellar field now boasts eight of the top ten players in the Official World Golf Rankings, as the pair join Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele.

Meanwhile, Fowler, who claimed his first win in Europe at the event in 2015, will return for a seventh appearance, hoping to build on his strong record in East Lothian.

European Ryder Cup star Hovland will be making his second start at the Genesis Scottish Open, although his sights will be set higher than last year, as the Norwegian missed the cut.

The 25-year-old arrives on the back of a top 20 finish at last week’s US Open, after winning the Memorial Tournament and finishing second at the PGA Championship.

Hovland said: “It’s been an awesome season so far, with a memorable win a few weeks ago. I’m looking forward to getting back to Scotland in July and hopefully keeping the form rolling.”

Patrick Cantlay made his debut in the event last year, finishing in a tie for fourth place before recording a top-ten finish at the 150th Open Championship a week later.

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion also placed inside the top 20 at Los Angeles Country Club last week, after tying for ninth at the PGA Championship.

Cantlay said: “I had an enjoyable two weeks in Scotland last summer, and I’m pleased to be able to add the Genesis Scottish Open to my schedule again ahead of The Open.”

Fowler completes the latest trio of star-studded names to be added to the field, providing the competition with another prolific champion.

The five-time PGA Tour winner has three top tens to go with his win in just six tournament appearances.

He said: “I always enjoy coming back to the Genesis Scottish Open, and particularly to this area, where I have great memories. It will be fun to tee it up in front of the Scottish fans again.”

The Genesis Scottish Open takes place from July 13-16 at the Renaissance Club.
