Lydia Ko and Jason Day edged out Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners to win the first LPGA and PGA Tour mixed event since 1999 at the Grant Thornton Invitational.

New Zealand’s Ko birdied the 17th with a stunning approach on Sunday, before settling for a par at the last alongside Day to seal victory at Tiburon Golf Club in Florida.

Ko and Day posted a six-under final round 66 in a modified fourball format, holding off the Canadian duo Henderson and Conners who had carded an impressive 63.

The win provided a huge boost to Ko on the end of a disappointing season, where she failed to qualify among the top 60 for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship on the LPGA Tour.

Alongside Day, the pair of former world No.1s shared a $1million winner’s cheque in the event featuring 16 mixed pairs.

The modified fourball event saw each player tee off, with the teammates switching balls for the second shots and then completing the hole.

Madelene Sagstrom and Ludvig Aberg, the Swedish superstars of the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup, took third, while favourites Nelly Korda and Tony Finau finished in a tie for fourth with Megan Khang and Denny McCarthy.

“It felt like the most stress-free win because I just knew [Ko] was going to step up in the end, which was fantastic,” Day said. “It was a fun week. I think having the two tours join this week was a fun way to finish the year out.”

Ko, meanwhile, hopes this inaugural tournament was only the start for mixed events between the PGA and LPGA Tours.

“I think this has just been a great start for the two tours coming together and having a mixed event, and I really hope this is something that continues for a long time,” Ko said.
