Ian Poulter insists DP World Tour players “would be mad” not to pursue a move to LIV Golf, which he believes is on a “different level” to his old European circuit.

The Englishman, who co-captains LIV’s Majesticks team, has told the Telegraph that the Saudi-funded league is too much of an attractive proposition to turn down.

Poulter resigned his DP World Tour membership after 23 years in the wake of mounting fines and suspensions following his defection to the LIV series.

And the 47-year-old does not expect other players on the formerly known European circuit to be deterred by any similar punishments when weighing up a move to LIV.

“I am not going to give any names, but we’ve been contacted about players wanting to join,” Poulter said on Wednesday ahead of LIV’s $50m Team Championship finale at Trump Doral in Miami.

“And that’s no surprise. Think about it, they’ll probably get fined, but if a player takes that chance, pays say $50,000 or whatever, then he makes it into the top three then he will earn minimum $1.75 million in 14 events in 2024. That’s minimum. Even if they shoot level 80s every week.

“It’s $20 million purses and then the prizes from the team events on top and you’re playing against the likes of Brooks [Koepka], DJ [Dustin Johnson], Cam [Smith], Talor [Gooch] every week? If you’re on the DP World Tour then you’d be mad not to back yourself and have a go. It’s a different level.”

Despite talks of a prospective peace deal between the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) bankrolling the fledgling and the two established circuits still ongoing, there is still a chance for DP World Tour players to join the 2024 LIV roster.

An inaugural Promotions Event set for December will have three places up for grabs, though it is uncertain whether DP World Tour chief Keith Pelley will sanction releases for his players wishing to take part in a bid to qualify.

But regardless, Phil Mickelson is adamant that another exodus to LIV is coming. The six-time major champion is certain that more PGA Tour players want to jump ship and join him on the lucrative circuit.

“Do I think that? No. I  know that’s going to happen,” he replied when asked about more players joining LIV.

“When players look at LIV, they are wanting to be a part of it. Everybody here is happy and enjoying what we are doing and enjoying the team aspect of it and the camaraderie and all the benefits that come with playing this tour.”
