“I had a feeling it was my time”
WHAT: Winning the Masters
WHERE: Augusta National
WHEN: Apr ’91
“The first thing I remember is that it seemed to take forever walking up the 18th. I just wanted to get on the green safely and give myself a putt at the title, which I did. I think it was, what, seven or eight feet and, when I looked at the line, I got a feeling right away that it was my time because it was no more than one ball outside of the right lip and a little uphill, which is almost the perfect putt to have if you’re a right-hander. I remember saying to my caddie, ‘I think it’s one ball outside the right’ and he replied saying he was going to say exactly the same thing, so I stepped up, hit it and in it went. What made it a little bit easier, I think, was that I knew that even if I missed I’d be in a play-off, so that took a little bit of the edge off. But, yeah, it was nice not to have to rely on that! All of your emotions just come flooding out when you see that ball go in and perhaps even more so in my case because of the grief I’d had from the galleries on that last day. All the way round, I got a lot of hassle but it worked to my advantage because I’ve always had a ‘little guy versus the big guy’ kind of personality, an ‘I’ll show you’ sort of mindset. So, the more they tried to get at me, the harder I tried to win. They spurred me on, to be honest.”
