The famous Wirral links will stage golf’s oldest major for the first time since Rory McIlroy lifted the Claret Jug in 2014.

Cameron Smith will defend his crown after memorably edging out McIlroy at last year’s historic championship at St Andrews.

The weather is so often an Open venue’s greatest defence and the same could be said for what is already set to prove a testing Hoylake course.

The Open: Long-range weather forecast 

Tuesday

Between 14-18°C. Scattered showers in the morning and a breeze from the north west blowing up to 18mph.

Wednesday 

Scattered showers throughout the day. Temperature topping 18°C again with lighter winds in the area.

Thursday 

Drizzle is expected as the early starters tee off. Winds from the west expected to reach 15mph at their strongest, with showers anticipated throughout.

Friday

Slightly warmer day with temperatures reaching 20°C. Expected to remain mostly dry with some showers possible and a moderate breeze.

Saturday 

Similar breeze to Friday with a low chance of showers throughout moving day.

Sunday  

Gusts could reach 16mph, adding an extra level of drama to the finale. Like Saturday, temperature is set to fluctuate from 16°C to 20°C.
