TIGER WOODS

Tiger Woods will not play golf for the rest of the 2016 season, it has been confirmed.

It means the 14-time major winner, who last played competitively at the Wyndham Championship 11 months ago, will not have played in any of the four majors in a calendar year for the first in his professional career.

A statement released through Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, read: “Continuing to make progress, but simply not ready for the PGA. Will not play in the 2015/16 season and will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the 2016/17 season.”

In missing the rest of the 2015/16 season, it means that Tiger Woods won’t return until at least the Safeway Open – formerly the Frys.com Open – which takes place at Silverado Resort from October 13-16, two weeks after the Ryder Cup. A more likely return date for Woods could be the Hero World Challenge in December.

Speaking at the Hero World Challenge last December, an unofficial PGA Tour event that Woods hosts in the Bahamas, the 40-year-old was very downbeat about his chances of making a full recovery following three back surgeries, saying anything beyond this ‘would be gravy’.

In April, hopes were raised that Woods’ comeback could be sooner than anticipated. At the Masters, it was reported that he had started hitting drivers while later that month, video footage emerged of him hitting 300-yard drives at a clinic.

However, in mid-May, Tiger Woods had a disaster on live TV, hitting three consecutive 100-yard wedge shots into water at a media day for the Quicken Loans National.

And speaking at the PGA Tour event four weeks ago, Woods conceded that he wanted to play again in 2016, but didn’t know if he would be fit enough to do so.
