LIV golf Tulsa preview

The PGA Tour’s money-spinning postseason has reached its conclusion.

The final 30 players that remain in a re-structured playoff format will compete for a staggering $18million bonus as the 2023 FedEx Cup champion at East Lake.

Those who progressed from the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields still have the mouth-watering top prize within their grasp as they head to Atlanta for golf’s most lucrative week.

Rory McIlroy will be looking to make more history just 12 months after becoming the first three-time FedEx Cup winner after a thrilling denouement at East Lake.

The Northern Irishman overturned a six-shot deficit on the final day last year to edge out Scottie Scheffler and scoop the $18million winner’s cheque.

World No.1 Scheffler leads the standings heading to East Lake, with Viktor Hovland now in second after his epic victory in Chicago.

The FedEx Cup’s final event is unique in the fact that, not only does it have just 30 players teeing it up, there is also a staggered start with the scoring.

This means that Scheffler starts at 10-under, on a lower scorer than Hovland, who pegs it up on 8-under.

The system was introduced to reduce the chances of having separate winners of the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, as well as giving the best performing players throughout the season the best shot of claiming the top prize.

Here is full breakdown of the scoring based on FedEx Cup standings:

  • 1st: -10 Scottie Scheffler
  • 2nd: -8 Viktor Hovland
  • 3rd: -7 Rory McIlroy
  • 4th: -6 Jon Rahm
  • 5th: -5 Lucas Glover
  • 6th-10th: -4 Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick
  • 11th-15th: -3 Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele
  • 16th-20th: -2 Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim
  • 21st-25th: -1 Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day
  • 26th-30th: Even par Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka

• Francesco Molinari named Team Europe vice-captain

Scottie Scheffler 7/4

Rory McIlroy 7/2

Viktor Hovland 5/1

Jon Rahm 7/1

Patrick Cantlay 20/1

The bunkered bet

Rory McIlroy 7/2

McIlroy’s final round 66 at the BMW Championship was made to look ordinary by his playing partner Hovland’s incredible 61, but he is poised to win the lot again at East Lake. The Northern Irishman starts three shots off Scheffler’s lead and, if his putter heats up, can snatch the FedEx Cup from the American’s grasp for a second straight year.
