Wells Fargo championship preview

The Wells Fargo makes a return to Quail Hollow and gets an upgrade to designated event status this week.

Players will once again be playing for a total purse of $20,000,000, as the PGA Tour’s eighth designated event this season gets underway at its usual home, Quail Hollow.

The designated/elevated status will dictate that almost all of the tour’s top players will be playing, but that’s not a change from the norm for this championship, with many of the best having it already clearly marked in the calendar. However, that won’t include Scheffler or Rahm, who are taking the week off.

Last year, the event was played at TPC Potomac, some six hours north of the usual venue. That was due to the Presidents Cup taking place at Quail Hollow that year, but they’re back to their usual venue for 2023.

Max Homa was the winner at last year’s temporary home, as he collected his second Wells Fargo title. His first, in 2019 was at this week’s golf course.

Another man who has performed well at this tournament is Rory McIlroy, who is set to make his first appearance since his MC at the Masters. The Northern Irishman has three wins to his name at the Wells Fargo, with the most impressive coming in 2015 when he finished 21-under-par and won by seven shots.

Quail Hollow also played host to the 2017 PGA Championship, where Justin Thomas was victorious.

This event has been played since 2003, with Wells Fargo the title sponsor since 2011.

The bunkered Bet

Xander Schauffele

Quail Hollow is a proper test. At over 7,500 yards the winner this week will likely be someone who can get the ball out there, and Schauffele fits that bill. He’s finished in the top ten in his last three starts, with one of those coming at the Masters. In a strong field he’s a good bet.
