Portugal is one of the top destinations in Europe for a golf holiday. But, what are the best golf courses in Portugal?

With guaranteed great weather, and fantastic food, the addition of some top-quality golf courses makes for a top destination.

Here are five of the best that you can play if you take the golf clubs to Portugal.

Monte Rei – North

Widely regarded as the best golf course in Portugal, Monte Rei is a Jack Nicklaus design in the Eastern Algarve. It’s a journey from the rest of the courses, but it’s well worth it, being one of the top layouts in continental Europe. It won’t be the only top course in the area for long, with the South course, also designed by Jack Nicklaus, coming soon.

West Cliffs

Opening in 2017, West Cliffs is located on the coast of Portugal, to the north of Lisbon. It was designed by Dye, but not the legendary designer, Pete. Instead, West Cliffs was designed by Cynthia Dye, the niece of the prolific course designer.

The course, which runs alongside the Silver Coast, offers superb views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Troia

A Robert Trent Jones design, this course is one of the most picturesque on the Portuguese course.

Like most golf courses in Portugal, particularly ones on the coast, you can be at the mercy of the wind from the Atlantic Ocean. If the breeze blows here, it can be a tricky test.

Quinta do Lago – South

The South Course underwent a renovation and is one of the top courses in Portugal. The resort is also home to the North Course, however the South Course is the top course at the resort.

It’s hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, so can test the best players in the world.

Oitavos Dunes

Just outside Lisbon, Oitavos Dunes is an excellent mix of parkland and links golf in Portugal. The course is situated on the most westerly point of land in Europe, and will test you with plenty trees, as well as everything you would expect from a links layout.
