The US Open is currently the third major in the golf calendar and has been contested since 1895, but who has won the US Open the most times?

In that time, there has been several multiple winners of the championship, which is run by the USGA and is often considered the hardest test in golf.

• Who won the first Open championship?

The most recent multiple winner of the title is Brooks Koepka, who won the US Open in 2017 and 2018. In doing so, Koepka became the first person to defend a US Open title since Curtis Strange, who won his second consecutive US Open in 1989.

But, which golfer has won the most US Open titles?

Currently, there are four players who have won the US Open four times. No one has ever won the US Open five times.

The first person to ever reach four US Open titles was a Scottish golfer called Willie Anderson. Anderson won the event in 1901, 1903, 1904 and 1905, becoming the first player to win the event three consecutive times.

To this date, he is still the only man to achieve that feat.

• Where will the 2024 US Open be played?

Anderson’s first two victories were in playoffs, but his second two wins were by a clear margin after 72 holes of stroke play.

The next golfer to win the US Open four times was Bobby Jones. Jones remained an amateur for his entire golf career, and won the US Open in 1923, 1926, 1929 and 1930.

Jones is one of the most influential golfers of his time, as he was pivotal in the creation of the Masters tournament.

After his final US Open victory, Jones retired from competitive golf to focus on his profession as a lawyer. However, in later life he did play at Augusta National on a ceremonial basis.

• What does the winner of the US Open get?

The next golfer to win the US Open four times was Ben Hogan. Another of the game of golf’s most influential figures, Hogan won the tournament in 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1953.

In his illustrious career, Hogan won nine major titles, four of them coming at golf’s toughest test. The 1950 US Open win by Hogan was home to one of the most famous photographs in the world of golf, as he played a 1-iron to the final green, on his way to his second US Open title.

• Where will the next Solheim Cup be played?

The final player to win the US Open four times is Jack Nicklaus. In his incredible career, Nicklaus won 18 major titles, so it might be a surprise that only four came at golf’s hardest test.

His victories in the event came over a long period of time, with wins in 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1980. The Golden Bear won both the Open Championship and the Masters more times than the US Open, which is remarkable considering no one has won more US Opens than he has.

One name you might be surprised to see has missed out on this list is Tiger Woods. Woods has three US Open titles, 2000, 2002 and 2008, narrowly missing out on the list of the most decorated US Open winners.
