The California-born golfer enjoyed a highly successful amateur career, winning the Haskins Award, the Ben Hogan Award, and the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2020.

Theegala then made his professional debut that year and began to garner attention with a few top finishes.

And in September 2023, he got off the mark on the PGA Tour when he lifted the Fortinet Championship title.

There has only been one man on the bag for Theegala since turning pro and so far, it seems to be working.

Sahith Theegala’s caddie is experienced bagman Carl Smith.

The player/caddie dynamic is explored in Season 3 of Netflix’s Full Swing.

Carl Smith, who was a player and assistant coach at Pepperdine University, took up caddying in 2015, when he began working with Cameron Tringale.

Without knowing, Smith’s time at Pepperdine would land him today’s job. He recruited Sahith Theegala to the university after watching him in many events.

He ended up leaving before Sahith Theegala arrived but caddied for him in Korn Ferry Tour finals, where he earned his place on the PGA Tour.

In 2018, Smith recalled his best memory as a caddie was working with Tringale at the Masters, although he has since been on the bag at multiple major championships with Theegala.

One of the biggest changes for the Golf Performance Coach was learning to trust Theegala.

He said: “He has this ability if he’s out of position off the tee to just shape it crazy around trees.

“There’s probably one shot a tournament that I’m just, ‘Alright, I’m going to let him do it, I guess,’ and I’ve never regretted it. He always seems to pull it off.”

In an interview with the PGA Tour in January 2022, Smith talked up the pair’s relaxed relationship and what they talk about inside the ropes.

He said: “We talk about basketball all the time because I follow basketball and the Lakers a lot.”

And after the 2024 season finished, Theegala wanted to reward his caddie.

As recorded by his girlfriend, Theegala handed over a $50,000 dream Rolex watch.

“Even if you didn’t get me anything, and even if you just say, ‘Thank you,’ it makes me want to show up and work harder every day,” Smith said to Theegala near the end of the video.
