Since graduating from university, Sahith Theegala has established himself as one of the most promising golfers on the PGA Tour.
One of the most impressive young players in golf, Theegala has also built a reputation for being a bit of an escape artist with his recovery shots.
Despite only being on the established American circuit since the 2021/22 season, the California-born man has been in the winner’s circle.
To achieve that, Theegala has shown far more skill than just getting out of bad positions on the course.
So, with one man crafting his swing, who is Sahith Theegala’s coach?

Sahith Theegala’s coach Rick Hunter
The longtime coach in charge of Sahith Theegala’s swing is veteran swing coach Rick Hunter.
From a young age, Hunter was aware of Theegala’s talent, explaining the qualities he had that would see him on his path to becoming an elite golfer.
“He knew it, I knew it and his parents knew from a very young age that he was born to be a TOUR player,” Hunter said.
In the PGA Tour’s documentary ‘The Life: Sahith Theegala’, Hunter shared how impressed he is with Theegala’s ability to execute complicated shots.
Hunter’s favourite example came at the Genesis Invitational in 2017.
Paired with Phil Mickelson for the final 32 holes on Sunday after a weather delay, Theegala hit his tee shot on the famed par-3 sixth hole over the bunker to the back of the green.
With a front hole location, he had no chance of putting it, but it didn’t matter. He still got up-and-down for par.
“He had no shot, absolutely no shot, but he pulled out his sand wedge and hit this unbelievable shot just to the left of the pin and made 3,” Hunter recalled.
The pair began working together when Theegala was seven years old. In his hometown of Los Angeles, he played at El Prado, a public golf course.
That is where his coach was based, in fact, Hunter still works at El Prado as the Director of Instruction.
Having taught over 40,000 lessons, Hunter has been a Class A PGA member for 27 years, so without a shadow of a doubt, is one of the most experienced coaches in the game.
A nationally recognised junior teacher, Theegala’s coach has worked with three players who have won five junior world titles and other nationally recognized events.
Meanwhile, three of his students went on to become college “All-Americans”, including Theegala.
Throughout a glittering amateur career at Pepperdine University, Theegala worked heavily with men’s golf coach Michael Beard.
He even caddied for Theegala on a few occasions, while Ty Watkins was another coach Theegala learned from during his time at high school.
