The third course in Continental Europe to host the Ryder Cup, Marco Simone Country Club – located just ten miles from the centre of Rome – was given the nod to stage the match in December 2018. The decision raised eyebrows, not least given that it held off the challenge of supposed stronger bids from Germany and Spain to win the rights.
