It’s a new event on the PGA Tour schedule this week, as a field including Jon Rahm heads to the west coast of Mexico.
The Mexico Open has been held under various names since 1944, but up until now has never been a fixture on the PGA Tour. Most recently, the event has been contested as part of the Latinoamerica Tour, but now it will be host to some of the biggest names in the game.
The event, sponsored by Grupo Salinas and Grupo Vidanta, now takes the place of the discontinued World Golf Championship on the schedule. The players will be making their way south of the border, where a brand-new venue in the form of Vidanta Vallarta awaits them. The Greg Norman design opened in 2015, and the Shark had plenty water lining the fairways, so the players would do well to steer clear of that.
World No. 3 Jon Rahm will be the star attraction in a field made up of 132 players, which will include 12 sponsors exemptions, with a minimum of four players from Latin America.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new event, before it gets underway on Thursday…

Mexico Open betting tips
Here’s some of the names committed to the event so far:
Jon Rahm 11/2
Abraham Ancer 22/1
Tony Finau 25/1
Patrick Reed 28/1
Gary Woodland 28/1
Aaron Wise 40/1
Chris Kirk 40/1
Kevin Na 40/1
Cameron Tringale 40/1
The bunkered Bet:
Kevin Na: Clearly, the favourite this week is Jon Rahm, with some bookmakers having him at 5/1. However, if you want some value then Kevin Na is a good option. The world No. 32 has made his last three cuts, and although he hasn’t been in contention, he’s showing decent form. Expect him to be at the right end of the leader board come Sunday.
