LIV Golf is about to stage its first ever qualifying school.

The Saudi-backed league will make its first big step towards becoming a merit-based circuit with the inaugural LIV Golf Promotions event at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club from December 8-10.

Over 70 players will tee it up in a unique 72-hole strokeplay tournament with three spots up for grabs on LIV’s roster for 2024.

Notable names in the field include former PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner and and Jeff Overton.

Victor Dubuisson had entered, but later withdrew and subsequently announced his shock retirement.

Chase Koepka, the brother of five-time major champion Brooks, has also withdrawn after being relegated from the league while playing on the Smash GC team last year.

Laurie Canter, who was a reserve on the Majesticks GC team co-captained by Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson in 2023, will bid to secure his full status as a LIV player.

A handful of players, including Dufner and Canter, are exempt from “Round One”, where the top 20 and ties from Friday’s first round advance into the second stage.

The players with exemptions then enter in round two, where the same number of players qualify for a 36-hole shootout on Sunday, with three lucrative LIV spots on the line.
