Past winner, John Daly has confirmed his disappointment for being forced to withdraw from the PGA Championship this week.

The 57-year-old joins a growing list of former champions who won’t tee it up at Oak Hill this week including Tiger Woods, Jason Dufner, and Martin Kaymer.

Daly, who won the PGA Championship in 1991, took to Twitter to tell fans about the knee injury leaving him on the sidelines.

He said: “Sorry to WD from this yrs PGA Championship, but since my left knee replacement being only a few months ago… IT band had severe swell up!

“Gutted to miss my fans & people of Rochester! Wishing all the guys a great major wk.”

Earlier in the week, Daly said in a statement: “I’m really disappointed to miss the PGA Championship. This major means the world to me and will always have a special place in my heart.”

The fan favourite played all four rounds on the Champions Tour last week but finished in a tie for 65th on seven-over-par, while his last start on the PGA Tour resulted in a missed cut at the Zurich Classic in April.

Despite winning The Open Championship at St. Andrews in 1995, Daly has struggled at the PGA Championship since his breakthrough win.

Daly has posted just one top-20 finish in the 28 following starts from his three-shot win at Crooked Stick Golf Club over 20 years ago.

The American has been a mainstay at the championship in recent years, though, missing only one of the last nine championships, in 2020.

However, Daly did also miss the tournament the last time it was played at Oak Hill Country Club, in 2013.

The previous first alternate, Stephen Jaeger, has replaced Daly. The 33-year-old German will make his first appearance in the PGA Championship this week.
