Dr Anthony Galea who once treated Tiger Woods has been charged in the US

The Canadian doctor who once treated world No.1 Tiger Woods has been charged with supplying illegal drugs.

Dr Anthony Galea stands accused of giving unlawful drugs, including human growth hormone (HGH) to at least three US professional football players – a charge which the Toronto-based physician strongly denies.

Dr Galea was charges in a federal criminal court in New York of unlawful HGH distribution, lying to US officials, conspiracy to defraud, smuggling and interstate commerce with the unapproved drug actovegin.

The charges have led to widespread speculation that Woods has used such performance enhancing drugs in recent years.

However, while Woods admitted to being treated by Galea, he fiercely denied ever having used any such performance improving medication.

The 34-year-old claims the only treatments he ever received during his five appointments with Dr Galea were for blood spinning, where a person’s own blood is placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells.

Meanwhile, Woods has also confirmed he will be entering the Open Championship at St Andrews in July.
