Luke Donald
If anyone was to break the mould and become the first European captain to serve a second term since Bernard Gallacher in the mid 1990s, surely it will be Luke Donald. The 45-year-old Englishman has galvanised a European side that was floored after the shellacking at Whistling Straits two years ago. He is an unassuming but inspirational leader who says all the right things. He had a clear plan and stuck to it as he proved a far superior skipper than Zach Johnson in Rome.
Crucially for Donald, if he does fancy a crack at the US side on away soil, he has the full backing of his players to stay on. “I think everyone sitting here would be very happy to have him again,” said Rory McIlroy. Jon Rahm added: “Luke has done an unbelievable job and would be difficult to live up to. He’s set the bar so high.”
