Tour signs five-year contract extension with shipping giant to stage event

Well Fed: Bill Haas won the most recent edition of the FedEx Cup, which will now be held until 2017

The PGA Tour and FedEx Corp have announced a five-year extension of the shipping giant’s sponsorship of the FedEx Cup. The deal will see the FedEx Cup continue to take place until at least 2017.

The competition was introduced in 2007 as part of a radical overhaul of the PGA Tour and, despite considerable teething problems with its complex scoring system, it has proven to be effective in its goal of extending the competitive golf season later into the calendar year.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the FedEx Cup will continue to offer $35m in total bonus money to players based on their finish in the points standings, including $10m to the winner.

“Since its inception in 2007, the FedEx Cup has transformed the competitive landscape on the PGA Tour and significantly benefited all of our stakeholders,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.

“It makes every FedEx Cup event more meaningful, adding substantial value to our tournaments, title sponsors and television partners. Most importantly, the FedEx Cup offers our fans more ways to engage in our sport and get excited about our players week in and week out.”

Finchem added: “We are thrilled that FedEx has had such a positive experience with the FedExCup and will continue its sponsorship through 2017 continued. We look forward to working with FedEx to continue the growth and impact of the competition in these coming years.”

Tiger Woods won the inaugural FedEx Cup in 2007, with Vijay Singh winning it the following year. Woods claimed the title for the second time in 2009, Jim Furyk bagged it in 2010, and Bill Haas won the most recent edition in 2011.
