A strong field is set for the first mixed team event staged by the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour in 24 years.
Not since the JC Penney Classic in 1999 have the two biggest circuits across men’s and women’s golf joined forces for a mixed team event, but the new Grant Thornton Invitational is set to offer golf fans something completely different.
The inaugural tournament will take place at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples Florida, which was for the venue for the LPGA’s season-closing CME Group Tour Championship.
Staged over three rounds from December 8-10, the Grant Thornton Invitational features 16 mixed pairs competing for a shared $4million prize purse.
English duo Charley Hull and Justin Rose will team up, as will fellow Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup stars Madelene Sagstrom and Ludvig Aberg.

Nelly Korda will partner Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson will star with Rickie Fowler, while women’s No.1 Lilia Vu will compete alongside PGA Tour fan favourite Joel Dahmen.
The other pairings are Megan Khang and Denny McCarthy, Rose Zhang and Sahith Theegala, Lydia Ko and Jason Day, Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson, Celine Boutier and Harris English, Andrea Lee and Billy Horschel, Mel Reid and Russell Henley, Cheyenne Knight and Tom Hoge, Allisen Corpuz and Cameron Champ, Ruoning Yin and Nick Taylor, Leona Maguire and Lucas Glover.
The event, which is billed as “groundbreaking” by tournament bosses, will be contested over Scramble, Foursomes and a modified Four-Ball format.
Round one is Scramble, round two is Foursomes and the final round is completely unique. On Sunday, both players will tee off, but then switch balls for their second shot and play that ball until it is holed. The lowest score on that hole then counts on the team total.
