Did PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan turn down a game-changing, billion-dollar offer from a current PGA Tour partner?

According to Phil Mickelson, the answer is a clear and unequivocal yes.

The six-time major champion made the bombshell claim on social media as controversy continues to shroud the PGA Tour’s decision to introduce limited fields and no cuts to eight of its ‘Elevated Events’ from next year.

That move has caught the eye of long-time Monahan critic Mickelson. He left the PGA Tour last year to align with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf League after accusing the US-based circuit of “obnoxious greed”.

Responding to a post from the @LivingItUpPod Twitter account, Mickelson tweeted: “Before I left, I brought a $1 billion commitment from a current PGATour partner to have 8 elevated events and give equity and ownership in these events to the players.

“JM’s quote was ‘I don’t believe the league is going to happen so we won’t be doing that.’ No vote, no discussion.”

Replying to CBS golf writer Kyle Porter, Mickelson said: “By all means please ask JM about this. I’d love for him to be on the record about this or the OWGR being tied to the tv deal or any thing else I’ve said. I have multiple layers of proof on all of it.

“Let’s see how he chooses to respond, and I’m curious if anyone will even ask.”

He wasn’t done yet

In response to another post from a user, who said that his criticisms of the PGA Tour and Monahan had been proven correct, Mickelson cryptically added: “So much more to come out this year too. I can’t wait.”
