It took a tightly contested final day for him to pull out the victory in 2019 – remember, the 2020 event was cancelled after one round – but that’s not really cause for concern. This tournament marked his first significant win in over a year, making it something of a slump-buster.
Many will harp on his tendency to start slowly in big events. That’s fair. But that issue isn’t historically specific to this tournament, and more faith should be put on McIlroy’s apparent fondness for TPC Sawgrass. In addition to his win in 2019, he has three other top-10 finishes to show from his ten appearances.
