World No.1 and ex Elin go public for first time since divorce

Tiger Woods has spoken out for the first time since splitting with his wife of six years, Elin Nordegren.

Speaking to media the day before the start of the Barclays tournament, the world No.1 said: “I wish her the best in everything. It’s a sad time in our lives and we’re looking forward in our lives now and how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. And that’s the most important thing.”

In a separate interview with US-based People Magazine, Nordegren said the couple tried to reconcile but their marriage was “without trust and love”.

The Swedish former model, who is reported to have received somewhere in the region of £100million in the divorce settlement, went on to say she had no idea about the affairs prior to Woods’ car crash in November 2009.

She said: “How could I not have known anything? The word betrayal is not strong enough. I felt like my whole world had fallen apart. I loved him. We had so much fun. I felt safe with him.”

Elin also told the magazine stress during the scandal had made her weight plummet and caused her hair to fall out.

Since news of Woods’ affairs broke, a string of women have been linked with the star, including former New York club hostess Rachel Uchitel, cocktail waitress Jamie Grubbs and Las Vegas model Jamie Jungers.

Taking questions from 30 reporters at Ridgewood Country Club, the 34-year-old admitted it was his behaviour that caused the spilt.

“My actions certainly led us to this decision and I’ve certainly made a lot of errors in my life, and that’s something I’m going to have to live with,” he said.

After a season of under-performing, Woods also told press playing golf amid the rumours surrounding his marriage was more difficult than he had expected, and that his form had suffered as a result.

“It was, certainly,” he added. “Because being asked questions all the time, even as the tournaments are going I’ve been asked questions while we’re playing. And that’s always difficult.

“And especially when I’m trying to work on a few things, trying to find shots in order to get around the golf course, and to have to talk about other things.”

After just two top ten finishes this year, the 14-time major winner lies 112th in the FedEx Cup standings, with only the top 100 players after this week’s event to qualify for the next play-off tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Woods’ Ryder Cup participation is also uncertain, having missed out on one of eight automatic entry spots for the US team, although captain Corey Pavin has indicated a willingness to pick Woods as a wildcard.
