Billionaire tycoon secures insignia for his new Aberdeenshire golf course

Overdue win: Donald Trump has finally won the right to use his personal insignia on his Scottish golf course

American tycoon Donald Trump has won a long-standing battle to use his own coat of arms in promoting his new Scottish golf course.

Trump, whose spectacular links near Balmedie in Aberdeenshire is nearing completion ahead of its summer opening, had been officially warned against using a bespoke personalised gold crest in matters relating to Trump International Golf Links Scotland by Scotland’s heraldic authority when he first attempted to do so in 2008. This, said the organisation, was in breach of ancient Scottish laws dating back to 1672.

However, the dispute has now been settled and Trump will, indeed, now be able to use a modified version of the crest he originally intended, entitled ‘Lion Rampant’.

Describing the insignia, Sarah Malone, the executive vice-president of the Aberdeenshire development, said: “The Lion Rampant makes reference to Scotland and the stars to America.

“Three chevronels are used to denote the sky, sand dunes and sea – the essential components of the site – and the double-sided eagle represents the dual nature and nationality of Trump’s heritage.”

“The eagle clutches golf balls, making reference to the great game of golf, and the motto ‘Numquam Concedere’ is Latin for ‘Never Give Up’ – Trump’s philosophy.”

The Trump International Golf Links Scotland is due to open for play on July 1 this year.
