• Bookmaker William Hill say USA overwhelming favourites
• Only 9% of money placed has been on a European win
• Rory McIlroy is the favourite to be Europe’s top scorer

RYDER CUP | BETTING

Darren Clarke may be confident about his team for the 2016 Ryder Cup – but it’s safe to say the people of the UK certainly aren’t.

With less than four weeks to go until the match at Hazeltine, bookmaker William Hill has reported today that only 9% of money placed on the match has been for Europe to win, with 89% on a USA win and 2% on the draw.

“There has been an overwhelming move for Team USA” – Rupert Adams

“There has been an overwhelming move for Team USA and you could be getting 2/1 on a European victory in the near future,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.

Europe Ryder Cup Press Conference

It’s an incredibly low percentage for Europe given that USA have won only two of the last eight Ryder Cups – with the last victory coming under Paul Azinger at Valhalla in 2008.

Odds on a European victory have continued to drift – now out to 7/4 with William Hill – since captain Clarke completed his Ryder Cup team last Tuesday by naming Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Thomas Pieters as his three wildcard picks.

And not even Rory McIlroy’s win at the Deutsche Bank Championship and strong performances from Westwood, Matt Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett at the Omega European Masters has altered things slightly back in favour of Europe – although McIlroy is, unsurprisingly, the favourite to be the highest European points scorer.

The Northern Irishman can be found at 4/6 to score two-and-a-half points or more and 4/1 to be Europe’s top points scorer. The odds for that market are:

Rory Mcllroy: 4/1
Henrik Stenson: 6/1
Justin Rose: 6/1
Sergio Garcia: 6/1
Danny Willett: 9/1
Rafael Cabrera-Bello: 9/1
Martin Kaymer: 10/1
Matt Fitzpatrick: 10/1
Lee Westwood: 12/1
Chris Wood: 16/1
Thomas Pieters: 16/1
Andy Sullivan: 20/1
