For the most part, Nicklaus was able to transfer his epic individual performances into the Ryder Cup arena. In six appearances in the match, he was never on the losing side – part of five US wins and one tie. It is perhaps in that tie in 1969 for which Nicklaus’ Ryder Cup legacy is best known, though, when he conceded a miss-able three-foot par putt to Tony Jacklin, halving the hole and, as a result, the match. To this day, it is considered one of the most famous gestures of sportsmanship in all of sport.
