Mistaking a playing partner for a reporter
The WGC-Mexico Championship in March yielded Phil’s first win for almost five years. It also produced a ‘facepalm’ moment when he mistook one of his playing partners in the final round for a reporter. Earlier that week, Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma – pictured above – attempted to introduce himself to Mickelson on the practice green in Mexico… only for Phil to make an embarrassing blunder.
“Me and my caddie Baaz, we both went up to him,” explained Sharma. “He thought we were media and he said, ‘Not right now, after the round.’ Then he just realised and said, ‘So sorry, I thought you were media,’ and he said hi, I said hi. Then he made a few putts and he came back to me and said, ‘Have a good day.’ It was nice.” Yeah, nice and awkward.
