The best players from Great Britain and Ireland will face their continental counterparts in the Hero Cup.

Bosses at the DP World Tour announced the creation of the team competition on Tuesday.

But what is it?

The Hero Cup is a team match play competition, similar in format to the Ryder Cup.

Each team will consist of ten players, with both sides picked by Ryder Cup skipper Luke Donald and an appointed captain.

There will be one session of foursomes matches, one session of fourballs and one session of singles ties, with Donald overseeing proceedings from inside the ropes.

It is designed to give more players experience of the format with a view to them being part of future Ryder Cup teams.

Slated to take place from January 13-15, the first event will be held at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

The new competition is essentially the same as the Seve Trophy, which ran from 2000 to 2013 and like the Hero Cup, pitted British and Irish players against those from the rest of Europe.

“One of the first things I was keen to do when I was appointed as Ryder Cup captain was to reinstate a team match play contest to give playing and leadership experience to future Ryder Cup players, vice-captains and captains,” Donald said.

“I spoke to a number of former Ryder Cup captains who were strong advocates of how similar events in the past have benefitted players who were pushing to make Ryder Cup teams, as well as their own captaincy journey.”
