Where will the 2023 Open Championship be played?

The 2023 Open Championship – the 151st edition of golf’s original major – will be held at Royal Liverpool.

It will be the first time in nine years the Open has visited Hoylake after it was the venue when Rory McIlroy claimed the Claret Jug in 2014.

The 2023 tournament will take place at the historic Wirral links from 20-23 July.

Royal Liverpool has hosted 12 previous Opens, beginning in 1897. Legends of the game, including J.H. Taylor, Walter Hagen, Tiger Woods and McIlroy are among a star-studded list of names to have won the championship there.

Two of the three amateurs to have won the Claret Jug, John Ball and Harold Hilton, were Hoylake members. The other, the great Bobby Jones, won his third title there on the way to a historic Grand Slam.

Hoylake has a reputation as a one of the toughest courses on the Open rota, particularly when the wind is blowing.

It is also regarded as one of the best tests of course management in the world. Woods famously only used his driver once during his 2006 victory on a setup which was playing particularly firm and fast due to the dry conditions.

A number of changes have been made to the layout in preparation for 2023, including a new par-3 17th hole.

The R&A has also announced the return of its ticket ballot system, which was also in place for the 150th Open at St Andrews. It will open on June 21 and runs until July 20, with the results being announced around the end of September.

Adult prices for tournament days start at £95, while kids go free through the governing body’s long-running scheme.

The tournament will also be broadcast live in the UK by Sky Sports.
