Not long ago, Dustin Johnson was one of the most feared golfers in the world. So, who is his coach?

The American was on top of the world in 2017, playing as the world No. 1 and a US Open champion.

He added the Masters to his CV in 2020 after consecutive runners-up finishes at the PGA Championship.

In between that was multiple PGA Tour wins, whilst working with some of the most renowned coaches on the planet.

There has been one man in particular, though, who has crafted the swing that made Johnson so dominant.

Dustin Johnson’s coach since 2014 has been the highly regarded Claude Harmon III, son of the legendary Butch Harmon.

Claude has elevated some of the biggest names in golf and also works with Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.

Harmon III has become one of the most dominant teachers in the modern game, thanks to his work with major champions in Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Darren Clarke and Trevor Immelman.

Commonly known as CH3, the coach often appears on Sky Sports and Golf Channel to offer unique analysis and insight into players’ swings.

Johnson has enjoyed most of his success with coach Harmon by his side. The pair split in June 2019, but that lasted only five months, as the pair soon teamed up again.

After winning the Masters in 2020, Harmon said: “What I saw last week was the result of five years of hard work.

“He’s a complete player now. He drives the s— out of it. His iron game is underrated. He’s done so much with his wedge game and short game.

“And he and A.J. [Johnson’s caddie] are one of the best—if not the best—on tour in how they work together, make decisions and read greens.”

Meanwhile, in the early stages of DJ’s career, he enlisted the help of long-term friend Allen Terrell. In the early 2000s, he was the men’s golf coach at Coastal Carolina.

The pair struck a relationship after a call from Johnson’s grandmother.

“For a coach, watching a kid you know have a family, be a great father, be successful at what they love to do, you couldn’t really ask for anything more,” he says.

Johnson’s former coach is currently Vice President of the Dustin Johnson Foundation, as well as the Director of Coaching at the Dustin Johnson Golf School.

They worked together through a brief spell in 2019 when Johnson split with Harmon and still work regularly.

Dustin Johnson was also spotted practising with legendary short game coach Pete Cowen at the 2024 PGA Championship. It’s unclear if they are working together.
